Report the loss promptly
Contact your insurance carrier as soon as practical after the damage occurs. Provide the date of loss, a brief description, and whether the property is secure.
You are generally expected to take reasonable steps to prevent further damage, such as emergency water extraction or board-up, even before an adjuster arrives.
Mitigation comes before permanent repairs
Mitigation stops ongoing damage: water extraction, drying, smoke sealing, tarping, and similar emergency work. It is usually handled as a separate portion of the claim from reconstruction.
Documentation during mitigation includes photos, moisture readings, and itemized scopes that show what was wet, what was removed, and what equipment was used.
The adjuster's role
Your carrier assigns an adjuster to review the loss, inspect the property, and compare contractor scopes to policy coverage and limits.
Adjusters may visit more than once as hidden damage is discovered during demolition or drying. Updated scopes are normal on complex losses.
Deductibles, coverage, and payment
Your deductible applies per claim according to your policy. What is covered depends on peril, exclusions, and endorsements. We explain our scope clearly so you can discuss it with your adjuster.
Payment timing varies. Some carriers pay vendors directly; others reimburse the insured after work is complete. Ask your adjuster how your policy handles emergency mitigation invoices.
